Hukilau: Literally, to "pull" [huki]"ropes" [lau] in Hawaiian.
Almost all Polynesians practiced some form of this purse seine type of
fishing, or driving fish into a trap net, after which everyone would help
pull the trap shut, then share in the catch. This 1920s photo shows a community
hukilau in Laie Bay, where years later their families would stage a visitor
version of the activity, along with a luau and Polynesian entertainment.
